Botox and Dermal Filler Post-Treatment Instructions

Botox and Dermal Filler Post-Treatment Instructions

Botox injections and dermal fillers are safe and effective treatments for enhancing beauty and helping you look more youthful.

However, it is crucial to follow our recommendations for preparation and aftercare. Failing to do so can result in unwanted side effects and undesirable results.

Before the day of your treatment, be sure you understand and can follow all pre-treatment recommendations and expectations for your procedure.

Post-Treatment Instructions for Botox and Dermal Fillers

  • Do not rub, massage, or apply pressure to the treated area for 6 hours after your treatment.
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and alcoholic beverages for 2-3 days following treatment.
  • Do not exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid sun and outdoor cold exposure until the redness from your treatment disappears, usually 2-3 days.
  • Do not restart Retinal or Retinal-A for 2 days after treatment.
  • Apply Arnica Montana cream to the treated area to reduce redness, bruising, and swelling.

Aftercare for Botox

  • Stay erect; do not lie down for at least 4 hours after treatment.
  • You may experience occasional tingling sensations.
  • An immediate headache is common, especially after your first Botox treatment.
  • Makeup may be reapplied immediately.
  • It may take 2-14 days to take full effect. Results can last 3-4 months.

Aftercare for Dermal Fillers

  • For lip fillers, avoid kissing, puckering, smoking, using a straw, or applying lip plumper for the first 24-48 hours. These actions can cause complications or displacement of the filler, resulting in lumpy or uneven lips.
  • Immediately following your treatment, gently apply ice packs to the treated area to reduce swelling and bruising. Without applying pressure, hold the ice for 10-20 minutes, remove for 10-20 minutes, and reapply. You may continue this cycle throughout the day.
  • Mild to moderate bruising and swelling is common with dermal fillers, but you can treat these temporary side effects with topical and/or oral Arnica Montana.
  • For two weeks after your treatment, avoid facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dental treatments, and face-down massages. You should also sleep on your back for the first two to three nights.
  • If possible, avoid makeup on the first day of treatment. However, you may gently cleanse and moisturize your skin.
  • Stay well hydrated following your procedure. The ingredients in dermal fillers attract and bind to water to add volume to the skin. Proper hydration is necessary for best results and helps maintain your filler for longer periods.
  • Some effects from dermal fillers will be immediate, but it may take up to 7 days to reach maximum results.

What to Expect After Botox

When provided by a licensed and experienced injector, Botox is normally very safe and effective and mostly painless.

You may feel a slight stinging or tingling at the injection site immediately after treatment. A small bump may also form, but these minor side effects typically disappear quickly. Some people experience a mild headache on the first day, especially after their first Botox treatment.

For the first few days, you likely won’t see any physical changes yet because it takes time for the neurotoxin to affect your muscles.

In two to three days, as the medication begins to work, you may experience tightness and heaviness around the treated area. Your facial movements may be hampered or feel different.  This temporary paralyzation of the underlying muscles causes your skin to look smoother and more youthful.

The heavy sensation will disappear as the Botox takes full effect within 14 days or less.
