Whether you’re dealing with physical pain or mental stress or just need a little ‘me-time,’ a deep-tissue massage provides release and healing from the inside out.

Massage Benefits

Aside from the obvious benefit of simply making you feel relaxed, a Swedish massage provides plenty of proven benefits.

  • Pain Relief — Through percussion, kneading, and long strokes, massage relaxes muscles, providing pain relief from general tension and injuries.

  • Stress Management — By providing a firm but gentle touch and a calm environment, massage is a natural and powerful technique for relieving stress and improving anxiety and depression.

  • Improved Circulation — Massage can also boost circulation, which can improve skin health, decrease muscle tension and inflammation, support healthier breathing and sleep, and may even lower blood pressure.

  • Youthful Glow — When your body and mind feel better, it will show on your face. Reducing stress, easing pain, and improving whole body circulation help combat the signs of premature aging, helping you look as good as you feel!

What Is Swedish Massage?

One of the most popular and well-known types of massage, Swedish massage, has been helping people for a long time.

Also known as classic and full-body massage, it has complicated origins. Many attribute its discovery to Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839) from Sweden. However, his ‘Swedish Movement System’ resembled physical therapy more than massage. He used terms and movements that Dr. Johan Georg Mezger adapted to what eventually became known as Swedish massage.

The movements Dr. Mezger identified are still the most common techniques massage therapists perform today. Those five movements are:

  • Effleurage — Long, gentle, relaxing strokes along an area of the body
  • Petrissage — Kneading and rolling of the muscles to relieve tension and improve circulation
  • Friction — A deeper rubbing and firm pressure into one spot at a time to promote healing and relaxation of tight or painful muscles
  • Tapotement — A tapping movement using the fingers or sides of the hand to stimulate muscles and improve circulation
  • Vibration — The gentle shaking or trembling of specific muscles that supports relaxation, circulation, and pain-relief

Depending on your needs, a massage therapist combines these movements during your session to maximize their effectiveness and benefits.
