Dermaplaning Pre- and Post-Procedure Instructions

Dermaplaning Pre- and Post-Procedure Instructions

Dermaplaning, an incredibly safe and effective treatment, not only reveals fresher, healthier-looking skin but also enhances the absorption of serums and products. It’s even more beneficial when combined with treatments such as HydraFacial or LED Light Therapy.

During this non-invasive procedure, your technician uses a scalpel to gently scrape away the topmost layer of skin. In addition to causing smoother skin through exfoliation and soft hair removal, dermaplaning improves acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and rough or uneven skin.

Although it is very safe, it may not be suitable for everybody. People with skin rashes or infections in the treatment area, eczema, psoriasis, skin growths, and active acne should consider alternative treatments. Furthermore, following all pre- and post-procedure instructions is important to avoid unwanted and unnecessary side effects.

Dermaplaning Pre-Procedure Instructions

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 1 week before treatment, and wear SPF 30+ daily.
  • Do not use harsh exfoliants for 1 week prior to treatment.
  • Discontinue using Hydroquinone, Tretinoin, and retinoid-type products 3 days before your appointment.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, consider beginning prophylactic treatment at least 1 day before your treatment.
  • If you have had Botox or Dermal Fillers, waiting 2 weeks before receiving Dermaplaning and other skin treatments is best.
  • Please notify us immediately if you develop a cold sore, active acne, open lesion, or illness before your appointment. We will assess the situation and possibly reschedule your treatment.

Dermaplaning Post-Procedure Instructions

  • Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning beds for 2 days following your appointment, and wear SPF 30+ daily to limit UVA and UVB exposure.
  • For the first 24 hours, avoid vigorous exercise, excessive heat, sweating, saunas, pools, and lake or ocean water.
  • If needed, you can apply makeup after your treatment, but it is recommended to wait 24 hours.
  • You may resume a regular, gentle skincare routine within 2 days using moisturizing, perfume-free products. However, if you are still experiencing sensitivity, spot-test products before applying them to your whole face.
  • Do not resume taking retinoid products for 3-7 days after treatment.
  • Avoid harsh scrubs, exfoliants, and other skin irritants for 3-7 days.

What to Expect After Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is typically pain-free, but some people, especially those with sensitive skin, may initially experience increased sensitivity or slight swelling. Most people will notice pink to red skin on the day of their treatment, but these expected side effects usually resolve within 24 hours.

Although less common, some people also develop small white bumps (milia) within a day or two of their treatment. These will also disappear on their own. However, it is important not to pick or scratch them. You could cause damage that might lead to an infection or scarring.

Finally, you may experience slight scabbing in the treatment area. Again, do not pick or scratch it. It will fall off on its own, revealing newer, healthier skin underneath.
